The Career Development Practitioners’ Certification Board of Ontario (CDPCBO) is pleased to invite you to an evening of stimulating discussion and networking. Join us to hear Tom Zizys, Labour Market Analyst, discuss labour market trends that impact our clients, our economy and our work as career development practitioners. Part of our role is to teach clients how to understand the labour market and develop ways to be career resilient as the market changes. This talk and our discussion afterwards will reflect the importance of LMI in our practice.

The Labour Market: What Problem Are We Trying To Solve?

Our changing labour market presents great uncertainty to youth making choices about their education, to job seekers looking for work and to career counsellors seeking to provide advice and guidance. A number of different trends are at play which contribute to an increasingly turbulent environment. This presentation will aim to unpack these trends and offer some suggestions about policy responses that could help promote more good jobs.

Tom Zizys

Tom Zizys has worked for over 25 years as a policy researcher and project consultant in the community sector, focusing on labour market analysis and designing employment programs. He works regularly with the various workforce planning boards across Ontario and frequently makes presentations to organizations and policymakers regarding labour market trends. Tom previously held a number of senior positions in the Government of Ontario, including Director of Policy, Premier’s Office. He has taught several courses at York University and Ryerson University, including program evaluation, public policy, and public law. He has also been involved in numerous international development projects focusing on civil society and poverty alleviation.

Koru Training @ McMaster University

Posted on

koru-mindfulness-logo.pngKORU is a 4-week, 1.5 hour per week mindfulness and meditation class, designed to teach emerging adults and students how to better manage their stress. It was developed at Duke University by psychiatrist Dr. Holly Rogers and others based on years of experimenting with various approaches to teaching post-secondary students’ mindfulness and meditation skills.

With our MHIF fund, Arrive and Thrive at McMaster trained 6 counselling and health professionals and offered KORU on campus. We led 22 groups over 18 months with 205 of the participants completing some of our outcome measures. Our preliminary results based on this feasibility study are outlined on a research poster (attached), and indicate significant reductions in stress (Perceived Stress Scale), anxiety and depressive symptoms (Kessler 10 Scale) and increased mindfulness (Cognitive and Affective Mindfulness Scale). We also had high retention rates, with over 80% attending at least 3 classes. KORU teachers and students expressed very positive feedback about teaching and taking these classes.

KORU at McMaster: A 4-week Group Program Teaching Meditation and Mindfulness Practice to Post-secondary Students

We are considering offering a teacher training at McMaster in November 2017 possibly a Thursday to Saturday in Hamilton, bringing in the leaders/trainers from Duke for a 3-day training at a cost of approximately $1900 per person including food and training (no accommodations) for between 40-60 individuals. We would like to get an idea about the numbers who might be potentially interested in participating in this training before we commit to this.

If you are interested and can secure potential funding to cover your costs, please contact me with the subject KORU TRAINING at munnc@mcmaster.ca. Details of the pre-requisites and KORU are available on the KORU site at http://korumindfulness.org/

Living with Grief: When Grief is Complicated

Wednesday, May 31, 2017

1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Heritage Green Seventh-day Adventist Church 349 Isaac Brock Drive
Stoney Creek (Mountain) Ontario

About the Program:

While most individuals experiencing loss face grief, most grievers can cope with loss and subsequent grief in ways defined by their culture as appropriate and can fulfill, after brief and intermittent impairment, their social and workplace roles. However, research shows that between 10 and 20 percent of people who experience loss experience more disabling reactions, including Complicated Grief or other conditions such as PTSD, Major Depressive Disorder, Separation Anxiety Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, or substance abuse. Complicated Grief reactions may also be a factor in physical illness. This program looks at how to identify disabling grief reactions and when referrals to specially trained clinicians or professionals may be indicated and necessary.

Program Outline:

Part I: The Nature of Complicated Grief
Part II: Supporting Grievers Experiencing Complicated Grief Brief Intermission
Part III: Conclusion: Next Steps
